Volunteer

Volunteers play an important role in creating a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for students in the Scotland STORM program. Whether you're helping a student stay on task during homework time or leading a fun activity, your presence helps students feel seen, supported, and valued. Volunteering with STORM is a great way for high school students to earn SSL hours while developing leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.

Who can volunteer with Scotland STORM?
We welcome high school students in grades 11–12, college students, and adults with an interest in education. Volunteers should enjoy working with children and be committed to showing up consistently.

What do volunteers do?
Volunteers assist with a range of activities, including homework help, academic support, sports and recreation, creative enrichment, and group games. They play an important role in building positive relationships with students and creating a welcoming, structured environment where learning and play go hand in hand. All volunteer efforts are guided and supervised by our dedicated staff team.

When and where does the program take place?
Our afterschool program operates Monday-Thursday, 3:00-6:00 PM at Cabin John Middle School. Our summer program runs Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM (late June through early August). Volunteers are welcome to serve once a week or multiple days—whatever fits your schedule.

Is training or clearance required?
Yes. All volunteers must:

  • Attend a short orientation session
  • Complete a background check or safety attestation, depending on age and role
  • Follow all program guidelines and safety protocols

Can I earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours?
Absolutely! Scotland STORM is an approved site for SSL hours in Montgomery County. We provide documentation upon request and track your hours as you serve.

How do I sign up?
Email Renee TenEyck, Program Director, at reneeteneyck@gmail.com with your name, school, grade, and availability. A team member will follow up with next steps, including orientation details and scheduling.
