Academic Enrichment

tutoring

At Scotland STORM, our academic enrichment program is designed to build both foundational skills and long-term success. We serve students from the Scotland community during the school year and summer months—offering structured tutoring, enrichment activities, and relationship-centered support. Our approach is guided by the belief that academic success is not just about grades, but about building confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of identity.

Using a whole-child model grounded in research and community values, our programs align with the Evidence of Learning framework used by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), focusing on literacy, math proficiency, school engagement, and social-emotional development. By blending culturally responsive teaching with data-informed strategies, we help students strengthen academic performance while preparing them for middle school, high school, and beyond.

Academic Support & Enrichment

Our academic sessions are led by certified MCPS teachers and trained instructors who provide personalized support in literacy and math. Students engage in:

  • Homework help and skill-building aligned with school expectations
  • Small-group instruction and one-on-one tutoring
  • Reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and math fluency activities
  • Reinforcement of academic benchmarks outlined in MCPS's Evidence of Learning

By maintaining close alignment with students’ daily classroom work and educational goals, we ensure that learning is relevant, individualized, and measurable.

Social-Emotional Learning & Mentorship

We believe that academic success is deeply connected to emotional well-being and identity development. That’s why our program fosters:

  • Strong relationships between staff and students built on trust, consistency, and care
  • Positive behavior modeling, emotional regulation strategies, and group reflection
  • Daily rituals that affirm students’ sense of belonging, voice, and leadership
  • A structured, trauma-informed environment where children feel safe and seen

Our staff serve as mentors, role models, and trusted adults, helping students grow in confidence, navigate challenges, and develop healthy peer relationships.

Cultural Identity & Community Connection

At the heart of Scotland STORM is the legacy of the Scotland community. We intentionally incorporate cultural grounding into all aspects of programming, including:

  • Activities that explore Black history, community legacy, and student identity
  • Storytelling, journaling, and art that allow students to reflect on who they are and where they come from
  • Field trips to local landmarks and college campuses to connect learning to real-world opportunities
  • Program values that celebrate the resilience and contributions of Black communities in Montgomery County

Students are encouraged to see themselves as part of a larger story—one of perseverance, excellence, and community pride.

Family Engagement & School Collaboration

We know that students thrive when families, schools, and program staff work together. At Scotland STORM, we intentionally build strong partnerships to support every child’s success. Our approach includes:

  • Ongoing communication with families about student progress, behavior, and celebrations
  • Family events and community gatherings that foster trust and shared responsibility
  • Close collaboration with classroom teachers and school staff to align on homework, academic challenges, and student needs
  • A commitment to transparency, consistency, and culturally responsive engagement with caregivers

By building a circle of support around each student, we ensure that learning continues beyond the classroom—and that families are empowered as partners in their children’s education.
